What are Pinterest Rich Pins, Why do you Need Them, and How do you Set Them Up?

Out of all of my social media platforms (which have over 100,000 followers), it’s Pinterest that drives the most traffic to my blog. For free!!!

If you’re new to Pinterest and not sure why you should be there for your business, in this post, I go over 6 reasons why you need to focus on Pinterest for your business.

On to the content! Today, I want to show what Rich Pins are on Pinterest, why you need them, and how to set them up.

Rich pins are just pins on Pinterest that have your website name and icon displayed underneath the pin image, which easily directs users to you!

If you’re confused, you can check out all of my pins here and see what they look like.

See how the title of the blog post is in bold?

There are four different kinds of Rich Pins, and they all show extra info directly on the pin.

  1. Product Pins include real-time pricing, availability and where to buy your product.
2. Article Pins shows a headline, author and story description.
3. Recipe pins show ingredients, cooking time, and serving sizes
4. App Pins show an install button so people can download your app without leaving Pinterest.

If you log into your Pinterest analytics, you can see your top pins, and at the very right you can see pin type. Those with an ‘R’ are Rich Pins.

Before you set up Rich Pins, be sure that your Pinterest account is a business account. It’s simple to switch over and you can do that here.

How do you set up Rich Pins on Pinterest? You can do it in three easy steps!

Step 1 to Install Pinterest Rich Pins: Install the Yoast SEO Plugin

In order to apply Rich Pins to your site, you need to add certain meta tags to your site. Not a techie? Me neither!! Yoast makes this easy peasy.

Yoast (I keep getting autocorrected to toast lol!) is an SEO plugin that I loooove! It can boost your blog’s rankings in Google when you use it right. So whether or not you use it for Rich Pins, I def suggest it for the SEO purposes. And it’s free!

Install and active Yoast, then go to the Yoast’s ‘Features’ tab.

Make sure that the ‘Advanced settings pages’ is enabled, and that will enable metadata

Step 2 to Install Pinterest Rich Pins: Visit the Rich Pin Validator

Go to Pinterest’s Rich Pin Validator, and plug in a link to any blog post on your site (but not the homepage). It doesn’t matter which blog post, you just need one.

Then click ‘validate’.

Step 3 to Install Pinterest Rich Pins: Apply!

After you validate, you’ll see a message saying ‘your pin’s been validated!’

Click ‘apply now’. A pop-up will appear with your site’s domain and ‘HTML tags’ selected.

Click ‘apply now’ again.

Woot! You’re done!!

Just wait a few days while Pinterest approves your application. Once it’s approved, your pins will be nice and pretty with your website name on each pin.

How to Get More Followers on Pinterest: The Ultimate Guide to Pinterest

How to Get More Followers on Pinterest: The Ultimate Guide to Pinterest

Woot! I’m pumped to share this post with you—we are going to talk about how to get more followers on Pinterest!!

First, let’s talk about why should you focus on Pinterest.

Pinterest works differently than other social media platforms, like Facebook or Instagram. The idea isn’t to broadcast images or ideas to followers, rather save content, ideas, or products for later, which makes it the perfect marketing platform.

Research shows that large amounts of Pinterest users use the platform to research purchasing decisions before they buy. 87% of Pinners have purchased because of Pinterest!

Pinterest is a huge driver of traffic! Pinterest accounts for almost 94% of all of my site traffic, over 34,000 viewers a month! What’s pretty crazy to me is that I have over 50,000 followers on Facebook, and only 14,000 on Pinterest, yet Pinterest obviously drives way more traffic.

I cover why you should focus on Pinterest in more depth in this post: https://rachelngom.com/6-reasons-use-pinterest-business/

Let’s get to my top tips on getting more Pinterest followers!!

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 1: Upload a Professional Profile Picture!

Is your profile picture the random gray person that Pinterest gives you? A picture of your cat? Or is it a professional headshot? I’m more likely to follow accounts that have a more professional feel to it. I highly recommend investing in a professional photo shoot, it will really take your brand to a whole other level!

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 2: Create a great bio

Your Pinterest account is not for you, it’s for your ideal client. So we need to craft a compelling bio that is going to attract the right people!

Your bio should briefly (in 160 characters) explain who you help, how you help them, and an opt-in (place where they can join your email list.)

Here is an example of my bio sentence: I equip female entrepreneurs to increase their influence, income, & impact by using social media. Sign up for my Free Pinterest Tips: tinyurl.com/pinterest-code

So, when you craft your bio, keep it simple and keep your target audience in mind. Answer the following so you can craft your bio!

I help ___________________________

Learn/Do/Become ______________________________

Sign up for (what do they get?) _____________________

Here are a few more examples:

  • I help busy moms lose the baby weight. Sign up for my free grocery list!
  • I help female entrepreneurs grow their income online. Sign up for my free branding cheat sheet!

Also, when creating your bio, keep in mind that Pinterest is a search engine. This means that you need to make sure you’re using keywords! You can infuse keywords in both the bio description AND your name. See my profile below as an example.

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 3: Pin often!

A good rule of thumb is to pin other people’s content 50-60% of the time and your own 40-50% of the time. When repinning other people’s content, I make sure it’s already getting traction on Pinterest and has been repinned at least 1,000 times. I’m using my own pin as an example, but if you look at the bottom right of the pin, you can see that it’s been repinned 77,000 times!!! #insanity

Don’t want to spend all day on Pinterest? I hear you! Get Board Booster and automate the entire process! It’s amazeballs!!

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 4: Create boards targeted to your audience (with the right keywords).

Again, Pinterest is a search engine! Name the board something that people are actually searching for. Instead of saying ‘My Favorite Recipe’, maybe use ‘Easy Gluten-Free Dinner Ideas’.

As an example, one of my clients is a fitness coach who focuses on intermittent fasting and macros.

I suggested she create boards around those topics, so her board titles are: Intermittent Fasting for Women, How to Track your Macros, IIFYM Recipes, and she’s creating more to go with her theme. What’s cool is she’s already at the top of the Pinterest search for intermittent fasting!!

Since my focus is female entrepreneurs, some of my boards are: Female Entrepreneur Tips, Pinterest Marketing Tips, Apps for Entrepreneurs, Social Media Marketing Tips, Inspirational Quotes for Entrepreneurs, Branding Tips for Female Entrepreneurs, etc.

What is your main focus, and what boards can you create to go with those themes?

To find out what people are actually searching for on Pinterest, start typing in the search bar. What pops up are the actual keywords that Pinterest suggests!! Cool, right?

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 5: Design visually appealing pins that are share-worthy.

I am obsessed with Canva.com for creating images on Pinterest!

Look at these two images. Yes, they are both mine. The first one is before I knew about Canva! Which one is more visually appealing? Which one do you think will get repinned? Which one do you think people will click through to read more?

When creating a graphic, make sure the font is legible, and have text on your image, including keywords. Pinterest can actually scan the text on your images (cool, huh?), which can impact your rankings. Finally, be sure your graphics are long and skinny. Use the pinterest graphic image on Canva.

Here are some examples of my top performing pins:

And here’s an entire post on how to create top-performing images on Pinterest.

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 6: Tell people what you want them to do in the pin description (give them a call to action!).

Here are examples of the pin descriptions for the images above.

Example 1: Have you ever heard of intermittent fasting? Ever wonder what intermittent fasting is? Essentially, intermittent fasting isn’t dieting at all, it’s just eating in a condensed window. For some people, intermittent fasting is going without food for 12-36 hours. Repin and read the ultimate guide to intermittent fasting for women =)

Example 2: OMG calling all PEANUT BUTTER lovers!!!! These are KETO Peanut Butter Fat Bombs These keto peanut butter fat bombs were so good!! Have you ever tried fat bombs? This was my first shot–and I know that I’ll be making more keto fat bombs in the future! Fat bombs are a super easy way to get your healthy fats in…and they are delicious!! Pin now, try later!

Don’t’ just pin something just to pin it. What do you want people to do? Give them that call to action!!

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 7: Create valuable content based on what people are searching for on Pinterest.

Your content needs to be valuable if others are going to share it! Quality over quantity. Instead of putting up content 5 days a week that is rushed and not your best work, why not focus on ONE really great piece of content that offers a ton of value?

I have an entire post dedicated to creating quality content (with the right keywords). You can check that out here (be sure to grab the free video while you’re there!)

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 8: Utilize Secret Boards.

Your Pinterest account should really be focused on adding value to your target audience. I’m not saying you can’t pin that chocolate cheesecake recipe, but if you do, you should add it to a secret board. Yes, Pinterest has secret boards!! It’s super easy to make boards secret. So pin your heart away at all the fashion, recipes, etc.

To make a board secret, we will go back and edit the board, then just click the little button that says secret. Easy peasy!

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 9: Join Group Boards.

Group boards are an amazing way for you to get your content out to more people! It’s basically collaborating with other like-minded pinners. The pinners that follow that board or are in the group will are more likely to rein your stuff because they’re your target audience! This will help you get more followers and get more traffic to your site.

Check out some group boards on Pin Groupie or Board Booster.

When joining a group board, just make sure that they are actively pinning to it, that each pin is getting repinned at least 10 times, and that it’s a board that your target audience would follow. I don’t suggest joining more than 5 group boards.

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 10: Enable Rich Pins.

Rich pins are great because they will add extra detail to pins from your site, as well as set your pins apart from everyone else by adding your logo or favicon to your pins! It’s easy peasy to enable rich pins and you can visit the Rich Pin Validator to do it.

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 11: Check out your Popular Pins.

Which pins of yours are getting the most traction? Check it out in your Pinterest analytics, and make a point of creating more content like that as well as repinning those posts! You can set up your own pins to loop using Board Booster!

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 12: Check the Links.

Board Booster has an amazing feature called the Pin Doctor, which will go through all of your pins and see if any have broken links! This is important because your followers don’t want to be spammed with pins that don’t go anywhere, and also Pinterest will rank your account lower in the algorithm if you have a bunch of broken pins. Use the Pin Doctor!

How to get more Pinterest Followers Tip 13: Keep Pinning!

Building a following and gaining traction on Pinterest takes time, just like anything else! Don’t give up after a few weeks of utilizing these strategies. Keep it up and you will start to see more traffic!

Woah, that was a ton of info. I hope you found it helpful! If you want to dive in super deep and really rock your Pinterest strategy, be sure to register for my next free Pinterest master class!

Oh, and don’t forget to follow me on Pinterest!

Question: Have you used any of these tips yet? Which one will you implement first?

6 Reasons Why You Should Use Pinterest for your Business (and How to get Started)

6 Reasons Why You Should Use Pinterest for your Business (and How to get Started)

I feel like Pinterest is this little secret that no one really knows about. I mean, it’s been the #1 game changer in my business. I started using Pinterest for my business a few years ago and I had no clue what a difference it would make.

More than my 50,000 Facebook followers, my 21,000 Instagram followers, or my 250,000 views on Youtube.

It’s Pinterest that has really changed the game for me!

I went from having ZERO traffic to my blog (except my mom lol) to over 34,000 visitors every single month. I went from no one seeing my content to launching a little $9 ebook that made $1,000 the day it launched and crashed my site! Crazy, huh?

Let’s talk about 6 reasons why should you focus on Pinterest for your business (if I haven’t convinced you already lol).

Why Use Pinterest for Business #1. Pinners come to shop!

Pinners are coming to the platform to search before they buy something. What if they came to search and they came across you and your products instead?

Why Use Pinterest for Business #2. Pinterest is a huge driver of traffic!

This is my website analytics showing Pinterest accounting for almost 94% of all of my site traffic, over 34,000 viewers a month!

What’s pretty crazy to me is that I have over 50,000 followers on Facebook, and only 14,000 on Pinterest, yet Pinterest obviously drives way more traffic.

Now, Pinterest is like any other social media platform, it takes time to gain traction. But if you do the things that I teach and you stay consistent, you can absolutely have the same results as me (or even surpass them). How would your business change if you were able to get 34,000 people seeing your content?

Why Use Pinterest for Business #3. Pinterest gains traction over time.

With Facebook and Instagram, after you post, it’s GONE within 24 hours. People won’t see the post after a day if they ever see it at all!!

Pinterest is different. It can take a pin some time to gain traction, but once it does, holy moly!

I have people coming to my blog, opt-ing in for my email list and buying my products from posts that I did a YEAR ago. This is all about my strategy of working smarter, not harder. Instead of focusing on Facebook ads and Instagram posts that the majority of your audience never even sees, why not focus on creating awesome blog content that can bring you business a year from now?

Why Use Pinterest for Business #4. Pinners have a 9% higher average income than non-users.

They also spend less time on traditional media sources like magazines, television, and catalogs. What this means is that you can reach your target audience for way less than it costs to invest in traditional advertising. Speaking of advertising…you don’t have to on Pinterest to see results. See the next point!

Why Use Pinterest for Business #5. Free traffic.

So we talked about how Pinterest was a big driver of traffic—but did I mention that it was FREE? Yes, you can pay to promote pins, but all of the site traffic that I’ve received has been FREE traffic. #score

Why Use Pinterest for Business #6. Pinterest is a search engine.

You might think of it as a social media platform, but it’s really more like Google. Pinterest has 200 million active monthly users, performing 2 BILLION searches per month. #insane

What’s even cooler is that Google wants to give you the results you want from a Google search, so you’re actually likely to see Pins and Pinterest boards appear high up in the Google search results. So while you’re working your Pinterest strategy, you’re also showing up on Google! #heckyes

Now, do you see why I’m so excited about Pinterest?? Free traffic, people who are ready to buy, content that gains even more traction over time, and a smarter strategy for you!

Now that you know why you need to focus on Pinterest, let’s talk about how you can get started using Pinterest for your business.

Register for my next master class, it’s totally free and I’ll dive in deeper about some of the strategies that I’ve used.

Cost: Free, with upgrades (I pay for all the tribes upgrades)

BoardBooster

BoardBooster is a tool to schedule your pins. It basically pins automatically for you!!

Cost: starts at $10/month all the way up to $110/month, depending on  how many pins/month you want

Buffer App

I’ve been using Buffer for YEARS and I love it!!! It’s how I pre-schedule all of my social media content. You can download the chrome extension and schedule posts from any site, plus you can schedule the same post to go in multiple places (like your fan page and a group). It’s amazing and saves me SO much time!

Cost: $10/month (but really priceless lol, it’s one of my fave tools!)

Live Leap

Live Leap automatically shares your Facebook live videos to multiple pages and groups. Basically, you start your live stream, and the soft share shares it any place you set it up to go. It’s pretty cool!

bit.ly

Use bit.ly to shorten links. It’s way easier to send people to http://bit.ly/pin-free than it is https://rachelngom.lpages.co/pinterest-fremium-copy/ right?!

Cost: free!

Cost: Free up to 200 tracked emails/month, then it starts at $39/month

Gmail Canned Responses

Hate having to write the exact same thing over and over again? Save it in a canned response! That way you can literally pull up the canned response, hit send, and boom! That’s it!

Cost: free!

Google apps

Google apps is a way for you to have a professional looking email address (mine is clientcare@rachelngom.com) rather than _____@gmail.com for your biz email OR using a hosted email service.

Aweber

You’re building your email list…right?? So you need an email marketing system to set up auto responders, follow up emails, send out blog broadcasts, etc. There are a bunch of different ones out there (Mail Chimp, Constant Contact, Infusion Soft…) but I started with Aweber several years back and haven’t left.

Cost: Starts at $19/month, as your email list grows, the cost will increase. I pay $149/month.

My guy is in the Philippines and I pay him $6.70/hour.

Creative Market

Creative Market is actually where I bought my brand fonts. Did you know you can upload fonts into Canva? Pretty cool! With Creative Market, you can buy and sell design content like vector patterns, icons, fonts, and more!

Cost: Depends on what you get!

fiverr.com

If you’re not quite ready for a virtual assistant yet, start with fiverr.com! You can outsource a project at a time for as little as $5! I literally have someone making me a video intro for my youtube channel right now for $12! #score
